THIRD GENERATION CONTINUES WILLESPIE NAME

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Wilyabrup-based Willespie Wines boasts three generations working within the family-owned winery – an incredible feat for a young wine region.
Marian and Kevin Squance planted their vineyard in 1976. The former teachers made the journey between Brunswick Junction and Margaret River every weekend and holiday for several years before finally settling in the region.
Daughter Trish Durham remembers working in the vineyard from a young age.
Despite attending university in Perth, Trish remained involved with Willespie.
“The whole family and friends get involved during those busy times such as festivals,” she said.
“Being a smallish family business, our staff are like extended family. They work very hard and often above and beyond their call of duty – but they do get to drink great wine!”
Three years ago Trish took on a permanent role. While Marian and Kevin remain actively – and passionately – involved, Trish has gradually taken on more of the sales and travel associated with wine shows.
With winemaker John Durham as her father and Trish from the Willespie bloodline, it would seem Becky Durham, 19, was born with wine in her veins.
While she has her eye more firmly set on fashion design, Becky has learned the wine business from working in the cellar door, at festivals and trade shows.
“I love being a part of it. It’s a great thing to know,” Becky said.
Willespie is famed for its aged wines. The dry grown (non-irrigated) vines produce high intensity fruit while aging brings great complexity and depth.
They have just released their 2001 Shiraz and 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, which are available through the cellar door on Harmans Mill Road, in the Margaret River wine region, or via mail orders and at limited retail outlets.
