Howard Park celebrated its 20th anniversary by inviting Australia's top wine writers to a vertical tasting of its Reislings and Cabernet Sauvignons at the Margaret River winery on June 16.

James Halliday, Ray Jordan, Ken Gargett, Peter Forrestal and Andrew Wood, alongside Peter Marsden from Avalon Cellars in Sydney and Daniel Stephenson from The Phoenix were among those who made the trek to the cellar door tasting.

Owner Jeff Burch said it was a great and rare opportunity for the company to reflect on the past vintages of Howard Park's two original wines.

”It is a very humbling experience to look at the wines year-by-year, remembering the Circumstances of the vintage, what hopes you had for the wine when it was young and later discovering how it has evolved,'' he said.

”It is at these times that the timeline of quality winemaking is forever imprinted in your mind.''

The anniversary of the winery's beginnings in Denmark in 1986 also coincided with the opening of a new-look Margaret River cellar door. The refurbishment had been undertaken to give visitors a guided tour through the winery and to build on the wine-tasting experience Howard Park Wines offered.
