Margaret River Signature Varieties Shine Through
An impressive 420 wines were entered by 86 exhibitors in this year’s Innovest 2003 Margaret River Wine Show which was proudly organised by the Margaret River Wine Industry Association.
Of these wines, just over fifty per cent were presented with a medal comprising 17 golds, 47 silvers and 154 bronze medals over two days of judging at Margarets Beach Resort on Thursday 4th & Friday 5th December, 2003.
Chair of Judges, John Hanley, explained why regional shows deserve support.
“Wine shows have been around since the 1840s and they are a great opportunity to see what our peers are doing, to improve and to develop the region’s focus,” he said.
Many new varieties are now appearing in wine shows and doing well. It was, however, the signature varieties of Margaret River that continue to win accolades. The judges commended producers for the leaps forward with Shiraz saying it was a ‘great class’. The 2002/2001 Shiraz class commanded attention, attracting 62 entries, the highest number in any class. The judges’ overall class comment read, “Pleasure to judge. 50% medals. Three strong golds and several silvers on the door of gold. Strong berry/briar fru
it matched to good oak”.
