Unprecedented Entries in Margaret River Wine Show Reflects Region's Growth
The strong growth of the Margaret River wine region has been proven by an impressive increase in wine show entries for the Commonwealth Bank 2006 Margaret River Wine Show.
At the close of entries deadline, 744 wines had been entered, an increase of 24 per cent on wine judged in 2005.
Despite challenging times within the industry, the number of exhibitors also increased by 20 per cent, with 125 exhibiting in this year’s show.
Now in its fifth year, Wine Show Technical Advisory Group Chairman Richard Rowe said the significant increase in entries proved the recognition of the Wine Show as an important event within the industry and the Margaret River wine region.
“It also demonstrates the value the Wine Show can bring to local business, through the marketing potential and credibility gained through a trophy or medal win,” Mr Rowe said.
With a number of new wineries exhibiting for the first time, plus some new labels from existing producers, Mr Rowe said the Wine Show was also proof of the continued growth of the Margaret River wine region.
For the first time, winemaking students from the Margaret River Education Campus will receive invaluable feedback on their wines with the introduction of two non-commercial wine classes. These classes have also attracted entries from Grape Growers.
The Wine Show welcomes back Brian Croser as Chairman of Judges for the third and final time. Mr Croser has had a significant influence on the professionalism and direction of the show. The Association is looking forward to the input of UK judge Bill Baker.
Mr Croser and Mr Baker will be well supported by a panel of recognised judges who actively participant in the national wine show circuit; Louisa Rose, Tom Carson, Tim Stock and Tony Jordan.
To recognise the significant of grape growing for the quality of fine wines, the Association introduced an award for Viticultural Excellence. Without skilled expertise in the vineyard, the Margaret River winemakers could not produce the wines the region is now famed.
The Commonwealth Bank 2006 Margaret River Wine Show will be held on November 29 and 30 at the Margaret River Education Campus, with the Gala Awards Dinner on November 30 at the Voyager Estate Barrel Room.
