Margaret River Wins Prestigious US Wine Tourism Region AwardWorld Wine Region 2006

The Margaret River Wine Industry Association was chosen to receive US-based Wine Market Report's award for Best Wine Tourism Region at the Mastercard International Wine & Travel Summit in November 2006.

The award was given for "showing its (the Margaret River wine region) support for a broad base of the local tourism economy."

WMR author Richard Cartier said the award was also for "demonstrating, despite some usual and thus unavoidable internal conflict and minority dissent, commitment to the benefits of private/public partnership and purposeful cooperation, including with the oft overlooked intellectual resources of academia."

" Perhaps because of its remoteness (it’s closer to Indonesia than to the South Eastern Australian wine regions), the industry seems to rely upon a fierce independent streak to create their own styles of wine," said Mr Cartier.

"As such, the wines are far more food friendly than traditional Australian offerings."
